North Korea In Books

30 May

Arthur Hofn - Literature

Some Interesting Reads.

For a country that is said to be closed off from the rest of the world there is an awful lot of books and documentaries about North Korea. I guess the fact that as soon as you are told something is a secret we can’t help but want to know. I’ve read and watched lots about North Korea, a closed country. I’ve read far less about Portugal, for example, which is a modern and forward looking country that under normal conditions positively welcomes tourists; in 2019 around 24 million of them. It’s easy to get caught up in the conspiracies and propaganda from either side when trying to find out about pretty much anything; it’s a lot harder on a subject as sensitive as a dictatorial country with human rights issues. You’re never quiet sure what…

How Mauritius beat the pandemic

Foraging for the soul

Manako Tamou

As Aotearoa settles down into the second week of the lockdown, we also head into the Holy Week, Easter and the Passover. It’s a weird time to be experiencing all of this. All the while, my own family completely ignore the lockdown whilst Covid-19 sweeps through society (in Australia not here – and yes I’m calling them out). The Passover irony is that those who don’t listen to the rules and breach the lockdown end up catching the disease.

I’m not saying that Covid-19 is a God-ordained plague. Or that passover and a lockdown have any strong comparisons – although there may be something to be said about staying inside to avoid a pandemic compared with following a ritual so bad spirits & bad vibes don’t come and wreck havoc on your household. I’m not knowledgeable enough to make such an opinion. The point I’m trying to drive home is…

HOLI – The Festival Of Colors

END OF AN ERA

19 May

B +Ve !!

Two legendary actors passed away an week back fighting for life and succumbing to cancer. While Irrfan gave in to colon cancer after a long battle, Rishi followed suit the next day to leukemia.

The news was terrifying and heart breaking at a time when we observe the lockdown period for a not so well known threat which medical science has no answer yet. I heard of cancer as cent percent curable long back but have no belief anymore.

Irrfan was a fellow from the National school of drama and an artist of very different category unlike many youngsters of present day. He had won heart of many by his remarkable performance in both bollywood and hollywood. I still remember his acting in movies like the Jurassic world and Life of Pi. There are many to name in the bollywood film industry like Paan Singh Tomar and recently the angrezi…
