Heart of Jenin

28 Apr

When a 12-year-old Palestinian boy was killed in the West Bank city of Jenin by Israeli soldiers who mistook his toy gun for the real thing, it could have been just one more blip on the news: one more war, one more child, one more human tragedy that ripped the heart out of a family and a community, but rippled no further into the world’s consciousness.

Heart-wrenching documentary follows organ recipients after shooting

In 2005, a 12-year-old Palestinian boy was killed in Jenin by Israeli soldiers who said they thought his toy gun was real. But his heart still beats, because his family decided to allow his organs to be donated to six ailing children in Israel.

Palestinian Ismael Khatib with Samah Gadban, a Druze girl in Israel who received a heart from Khatib’s son after he was killed by Israeli soldiers in 2005.

The PBS documentary TV series “Wide Angle” featured the story in its latest broadcast, following Ismael Khatib, two years after his son Ahmed’s death, through Israel to visit three of the organ recipients.

Khatib spent time in Israeli jails in the 1980s as a militant who fought against occupation.

But now he runs the Ahmed Khatib Center for Peace, a small youth center in the Jenin refugee camp.

“As we live and move and have our being, so from this vision, we create heaven in our own lives… and perhaps even heaven on earth.”
– craig (as inspired by Acts 17:28 and the words of Felicia Searcy)

“Aim at the earth and you may not get off the ground.
“Aim at the stars and you may reach the moon.”
“Aim at heaven and you’ll have earth thrown in…
and you may even hit the stars.”
– craig (as inspired by the famous quote by CS Lewis – 24th May 2012)

“When once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been, and there you will always long to return.”
– Leonardo da Vinci

“If a man is called to be a street-sweeper,
he should sweep streets even as Michelangelo painted,
or Beethoven composed music, or
Shakespeare wrote poetry.
He should sweep streets so well
that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say,
here lived a great street sweeper
who did his job well.”
– Dr Martin Luther King, Jr.

Instead of trying to reply to each one of you, I’ll just keep on writing

“If the doctor told me I had six minutes to live, I’d type a little faster.”

All proceeds go to needy and underprivileged children –

”Since I can never see your face,
And never shake you by the hand,
I send my soul through time and space
To greet you. You will understand.”

Ukraine: Stupidity in Action

It’s all too easy to imagine the high-level meeting in Kiev where the Ukrainian government decided on its next move. It probably sounded a bit like this: “Very well, gentlemen, we are agreed on our strategy for dealing with the Russians. First we will figure out exactly what they are trying to force us to do. And then we’ll do it.”

Of course, it sounds stupid when you put it like that, but this does appear to be the Ukrainian strategy in a nutshell. Or as Ukrainian Security Service General Vasyl Krutov put it, “They (separatists) must be warned that if they do not lay down their arms, they will be destroyed.”

Cycle of Lies: The Fall of Lance Armstrong by Juliet Macur, book review

While a lot of the material is already in the public domain, Macur interviewed more than 100 people, and she also gained access to tapes made by JT Neal, an early mentor of Armstrong, who was diagnosed with cancer around the same time and died in 2002. So hurt was he by how his former charge treated him that he was planning a book, and the tapes reveal Armstrong’s remarkable capacity to make enemies of those previously close to him.
